VP Debate Summary, Pence Grills Harris on Supreme Court (VIDEO)

VP Debate 2020

The first and only vice presidential debate of 2020 went a lot smoother than the first presidential debate. It also went very well for Vice President Mike Pence.

Many were unsure how his calm demeanor would match up to his often aggressive counterpart in Kamala Harris but Pence delivered such a strong debate performance that it is fair to say that he was the clear winner.

The democratic VP contender received the first question and set the tone for the debate by coming out swinging, decrying President Trump’s handling of the COVID-10 pandemic as “the greatest failure of any presidential administration in the history of our country.”

Vice President Pence absorbed the attack in stride and with class, even pausing to tell Senator Harris “it is an honor to be on this stage with you” before setting the record straight. He responded by saying that President Trump saved “hundreds of thousands of lives” by suspending all travel from China at a time when only five people had been infected, a move that Joe Biden opposed.

The first punch, so to speak, was landed by Pence against Harris when he admonished her for “playing politics with people’s lives” by casting doubt on the president’s vaccine initiative. Like a one-two-punch, Pence went on to call out the Obama administration’s disastrous handling of the swine flu pandemic which saw 60 million Americans fall ill.

One of the Vice President’s best moments was when he countered Harris’ allegation that the administration “lost the trade war with China” to which Pence quipped, “Look, lost the trade war with China? Joe Biden never fought it. Joe Biden has been a cheerleader for communist China over the last several decades. And again, Senator Harris, you’re entitled to your opinion. You’re not entitled to your own facts.”

Another highlight for Pence came on the topic of foreign policy when he praised President Trump for the destruction of the ISIS caliphate and told the story of Kayla Mueller. He reminded viewers Kayla’s parents were in attendance and quoted them as saying that if Donald Trump had been president, “Kayla would be alive today.” Pence reinforced this argument by citing Biden’s opposition to the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

Perhaps Pence’s best moment came when he tried to force Senator Harris to respond to the question that Joe Biden has been dodging for weeks- whether he would pack the Supreme Court. After she refused to answer Pence concluded, “I just want the record to reflect she never answered the question. Maybe in the next debate Joe Biden will answer the question, but I think the American people know the answer.”
