First Time Gun Ownership Skyrockets Amid Increased Violence Across The Country

More than 2.5 million first time gun owners have exercised their second Amendment rights in the first half of 2020 against a backdrop of many large cities seeing a double digit spike in homicide rates, nightly riots, and calls from the extreme left to defund the police.

Although many have received their licences, the surge in sales has left many waiting while their weapon is on back order, with stores unable to keep up with demand. The sales surge isn’t in one particular demographic either, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSFF) in their Firearm Retail Survey, gun sales are up in all demographics. Their website states:

During the first half of 2020, retailers noted that the overall makeup of their customers consisted of 55.8 percent white males, 16.6 percent white females, 9.3 percent Black males, 5.4 percent Black females, 6.9 percent Hispanic males, 2.2 percent Hispanic females, 3.1 percent Asian males and 0.7 percent Asian females. The highest overall firearm sales increase comes from Black men and women who show a 58.2 percent increase in purchases during the first six months of 2020 versus the same period last year.

10.3 million gun transactions were processed from January to June 1 of 2020, with some retailers noting a 95 percent increase in weapon sales, and a 139 percent increase in ammo sales.

With so many new guns now in circulation, there has also been a record surge in gun safety classes.
