We Can’t Give A Single Inch To The Left On The First Amendment And Here’s Why

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The Constitution Of The United States Of America is a wonderful document that is envied the world over. It protects many freedoms and rights that people of other nations can only dream of having and has made America the land of freedom and opportunity that it is today. However, that freedom is under attack and there are many who would try to remove the protection of the first amendment for “good reasons”. This article discusses why there is never a reason good enough to strip that right away.

There have been several attacks on the First Amendment over the last hundred years but one of the better-known instances would be Snyder v. Phelps. The Supreme Court voted 8-1 in favor of Fred Phelps, the head of Westboro Baptist Church and his right to free speech as long as it doesn’t promote imminent violence.

Many know of Fred Phelps and his church as the people who protested at military funerals with signs that a large portion of Americans find offensive. It is reasons like “offensiveness” and “hate speech” that the modern-day leftists are trying to use to change our rights to free speech and this must be stopped. We need only look at what is happening in the countries of some of our allies to see what could happen if the left gets their way.

For example, in the UK there are currently abuses happening on a large scale, where the police are visiting normal, law-abiding citizens to police their speech online.

Harry Miller, a docker from Lincoln, was contacted by a police officer on January 23rd this year for daring to like a limerick on twitter that was critical of trans ideology. The officer was directly asked whether an offense had been committed the officer replied that no it hadn’t but this would be recorded as “a hate incident”.

Two days ago, after making a complaint to the police force that called him, he was then questioned by an Inspector Wilson from Humberside police asking him why he felt the need to tweet what he did.

Him: But why do you feel the need to do that?
Me: Because I am a citizen and believe political engagement is necessary. Why are you asking me this?
Him: Because I don’t see why you feel the need to say this.

For the last five months, a UK based, Catholic journalist was being investigated by police for “malicious misgendering”. Caroline Farrow, a devout Catholic, had appeared on television with the founder of the trans charity, Mermaids, then later tweeted her feelings online.

There have been so many cases of these “hate crimes” across the UK and people can be charged over anything, from telling a poor taste joke, to stating their religious beliefs that a boy cannot magically become a girl.

This is why we can’t allow a single inch to be given on the First Amendment here, in the United States. It is one of the most precious things we have and others, unfortunately, are not so lucky. The left will try again and again, trying to convince you that they must be allowed to change the First Amendment because surely you can’t agree with racists and bigots, can you?

What won’t be said is that once they got those laws passed, they could be used for anything. They could be used to police your religion, your thoughts on immigration, your political views anything you can think of, can be considered as hate speech, or offensive to someone. So next time you hear a politician talking about changing the first amendment, remember the stark warning the UK has become and fight it with everything you have.
