NYC Public School Closed To House Illegal Immigrants

On Tuesday, parents of students attending James Madison High School in Brooklyn, New York, were advised that the school was being temporarily closed to house approximately 2000 illegal immigrants overnight. According to an article by the New York Post and a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by New York City Council Minority Whip Inna Vernikov (R), the students were dismissed early and required to do classes remotely on Wednesday. In Vernikov’s statement, she describes why housing the migrants at the High School was the wrong choice, not just for the students affected but also due to the location they were flown into. “…known to be susceptible to flooding, wind, storms, etc. It is not an acceptable place to house people.” Vernikov also stated that “neither are our public schools” while asking, since it is winter time, will the decision be made to find a new school to take them to whenever there is inclement weather while suggesting they be sent instead to Gracie Mansion, NYC Mayor’s official residence.

New York State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D) also released a statement on the relocation of the group of illegals sent to James Madison High School, referring to a bill she proposed concerning the usage of schools, daycare centers, and any community-based organizations supporting activities for children under the age of eighteen, not to be allowed to serve as shelters for migrants.

Additionally, it has been reported that residents were allegedly asked to help house the illegal immigrants.

In a related situation, six months ago, the Massachusetts Governor had asked residents to take in illegal immigrants.
