Last week, 13-year-old middle school student in Huntington Beach, California, Jimmy Heyward, was allegedly ‘humiliated’ by his principal for his unwavering passion for patriotism. Jimmy, who was running for the position of ‘Commissioner of School Spirit and Patriotism’ at St. Bonaventure Catholic School, had prepared a speech that centered around respecting veterans, the National Anthem, and the Pledge of Allegiance. However, the principal, Mary Flock, deemed it too controversial.
When Jimmy refused to remove the patriotic elements from his speech, he was reportedly barred from delivering it at a school election rally. His father, Ed Heyward, a concerned parent, confronted the school principal and vice principal at the assembly, accusing them of not letting his son speak because ‘his views didn’t align with theirs.’ In response, the school principal called the police on Ed Heyward, although the police reportedly allowed him to stay after they heard his side of the story.
The incident has sparked a significant backlash, with many calling for the principal’s resignation. A Change.org petition set up by Jimmy’s mother, Hattie Ruggles, has garnered over 2,300 signatures. The petition accuses the principal of unconstitutional censorship and calls for her to be fired.
Jimmy’s mother also posted the video of his speech to her Instagram account, which has since been shared numerous times across various social media platforms, including X. The story caught the attention of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who commented: “Hating on America is not cool.”
The school has defended its decision, stating that if a speech does not receive final approval, it adheres to its established guidelines, which means the student will not be permitted to deliver the speech. This response has not quelled the controversy, with many arguing that the school’s actions infringe on the student’s First Amendment rights.
