Early Wednesday morning, local Police responded to an anonymous 911 call to Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s home in Rome, Georgia.
Greene posted the situation on her social media saying, “Last night, I was swatted just after 1 am. I can’t express enough gratitude to my local law enforcement here in Rome, Floyd County. More details to come.”
Later she shared the following, “If this is the war the left wants, this is the war the left will get. I will never stop protecting children and defending their innocence. We have to immediately pass H.R. 8731, the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, to end the mutilation of kids.”
According to local newspaper reports and the Rome Police Department report, the officers responded to the 911 call, which led them to initially believe a man had been shot multiple times in the bathtub at Greene’s home. The caller also stated that a woman was inside the house and possibly had children. When officers responded, Greene assured the officers there was no issue in her home.
“After we cleared the call and went back in service, Rome-Floyd 911 received a call from the suspect, claiming responsibility for the incident and explaining his/her motives,” the report stated. “It was a computer-generated voice. They explained they were upset about Ms. Greene’s stance on ‘trans-gender youth’s rights’ and stated they were trying to ‘swat’ her.”
The report also stated caller said they are connected to a website, which Police stated supports cyberstalking, and gave the Police their user name on the site.
“Right now, Congresswoman Greene’s safety is our number one concern,” Greene’s spokesperson Nick Dyer said Wednesday. “Late last night, she was a victim of a political attack on her family and home. Whoever committed this violent crime will face the full extent of the law.”
Swatting is defined as: “The action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address.”
The incident is currently under investigation by the Rome Police Department’s criminal investigation division in conjunction with the Capitol Police.
In an interview with Newsmax, Greene shared the dangers of swatting and how it is more than just a prank call that could potentially get someone killed. She described that when she heard the knock on her door, she called it a “rude and scary awakening.” She stated that she was grateful to the Rome officers calling them professional and incredible and that they did their jobs very well. Greene also said she had heard people outside her bedroom window and saw lights but did not see any police car lights, so she wasn’t sure who was outside her home. Under normal circumstances, Greene would have grabbed her firearm but said this time she had a gut feeling to leave it instead. This was not normal for her in this case, as she typically would have taken it with her to answer the door. She described seeing the police lights as she approached her door and knew she was dealing with a serious situation.
