Mainstream Media Taken In By An Alleged Hoax. Again.

The mainstream media once again have egg on their faces, as they fall victim to another alleged hoax. Last month we had Covington, where innocent catholic schoolboys were slandered by the press and across social media. This month, we have the Jussie Smollett “modern-day lynching,” which was suspect from the outset but the news media couldn’t wait to tarnish half of the country once more.

If you’ve not been following this story, here’s a quick recap. In Late January, during one of the coldest nights of the year, Jussie Smollett claimed he went walking through downtown Chicago looking for food. He stopped at a subway and picked up a sandwich. On his way home, he alleged he was attacked by two men who yelled both racial and homophobic slurs at him, poured bleach over him, then put a rope around his neck. They then shouted at him that “This is MAGA country!”

This account was accepted completely uncritically by just about every leftist media outlet, no questions asked, even though there were several problems with his story from the get-go.

There were several strange things about the facts as reported:

  • Smollett still had the rope around his neck 45 minutes after the attack when the police arrived
  • It was the coldest night in the year, just before the polar vortex – hardly weather to run out for a sandwich at 2 am
  • Chicago is one of the top 25 most liberal cities in the US, so unlikely to contain people looking to specifically target gay, black men
  • After the alleged attack, Smollett made sure to pick up his sandwich before heading home

You would think that these points would make the mainstream media at least question the “attack” as reported, but it was allowed to pass unchallenged and was printed and shared across the internet for weeks.

The first objection seen by this writer was via citizen journalist, Tim Pool, who commented the day after Smollett’s story hit newspaper stands that he had doubts. Pool stated as a Chicago native that he used to skateboard in that area of downtown Chicago in the middle of the night and it just didn’t seem right.

Now, of course, things have changed, the Chicago PD have questioned two suspects in the last few days and released them without charge, and it would appear that the “trajectory of the investigation has changed.”

If the reports coming out of the Chicago PD are to be believed, the police now think that Smollett paid some extras from his show, Empire, to attack him. If true, then there could be severe consequences for Smollett in the form of charges and jail time.

There were the usual crop of politicians and celebrities on twitter expressing their horror and demanding #JusticeForJussie including Nancy Pelosi, Kamala Harris, and Corey Booker. They’ve all gone strangely silent, with Pelosi quietly deleting her tweet in support of Smollett without further mention of it.

Someone else had something to say about the whole situation over the weekend. Donald Trump Jr. tweeted his astonishment that the situation was ever taken seriously by the press in the first place.
