Hunter Biden was subpoenaed to appear before the House Oversight Committee for sworn testimony in a closed-door setting on Wednesday morning. Instead, he held a press conference on the steps of Capitol Hill demanding a public hearing.
“I am proud of my efforts to form global business relationships,” he began. “For six years, MAGA Republicans have impugned my character.”
“They have ridiculed my struggle with addiction, they have belittled my recovery and they have tried to dehumanize me,” Hunter continued.
The First Son can be heard saying, “Let me state as clearly as I can: My father was not financially involved in my business…”
Democrats, The White House and Hunter himself have never qualified Joe Biden’s involvement by saying “financially.” Consequently, many conservatives have taken this new talking point as an admission of guilt and a direct result of their nearly year-long investigation.
“Remember, Joe Biden said he never met with any of these people or talked to any of these people,” House Oversight Chairman James Comer told reporters on Wednesday.
“We expect to depose the President’s son and then we’ll be more than happy to have a public hearing with him. That was a narrative before we started this investigation. Now, we know he met with and talked to every single one of them. So, the President hasn’t been honest about his associations with these people that have been wiring millions and millions of dollars…”
Jim Jordan, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, explained why a public hearing is not appropriate before a deposition and called out the media for not holding Hunter Biden to the same standard they applied to Donald Trump, Jr.
By Noon, Comer and Jordan issued the following joint statement confirming that they will pursue contempt of Congress charges against Hunter Biden:
“Hunter Biden today defied lawful subpoenas and we will now initiate contempt of Congress proceedings. We will not provide special treatment because his last name is Biden.
Today, the House will vote on an impeachment inquiry resolution to strengthen our legal case in the courts as we face obstruction from the White House and witnesses. Today’s obstruction by Hunter Biden reinforces the need for a formal vote.”
