Episode Transcript
Intro: In today’s episode, we’re going to continue our discussion on the 3 parts of Man, spirit, soul, and body. We’ll be looking at some scriptures that talk about each of these parts and how they work together to form who we are as believers in Jesus Christ. So, if you’re ready, let’s jump right in.
Lance: This is one of the great mysteries in the Bible. Moses has this conversation with God, the burning bush. The Lord clearly is tackling this guy. He doesn’t want the job and God says, no, you’re going to go do this. And his whole life was a preparation for this but he failed in doing this one time earlier. In his soul, he had the memory of trying to liberate those Jews from Egypt and why is he in the wilderness right now to get the heck away from that lousy chapter of his life where he thought he heard God.
Mercedes: Yup.
Lance: The Bible says he thought God was using him and he found out God wasn’t. Now, we’re going to do that again. Measure some vows he had in his head. Anyway, God convinces him. I mean, it was a pretty he got talking to a bush in the first place. I don’t get your attention then it’s got a leper’s hand, then a serpent with a stick, a stick with a serpent, then he says, I can’t talk. Hey, look at this. Your brother’s coming by. Heron, he’s going to talk. He’s going to do the talking for you and so after that, God‘s done a lot here. Then, the Bible says as Moses goes to leave, the Lord turns to kill him. These are the verses in the Bible.
Carl: Classic Old Testament.
Lance: Yeah. These are the verses that really confuse people. Well, why would the Lord try to kill him, if he just to call him? Well, this is the interesting thing. It’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of living God. So, people go, well, that proves the Bible is just bunk. It doesn’t make any sense. But what happened was that his wife comes to the rescue and we find out that he was commanded already in the Jewish culture by Abraham to circumcise their sons and he had not done it. And because he hadn’t done it the Lord withstood him. Now the Lord didn’t kill him, but the Lord let him know, I’m not going to compromise on the revelation I’ve got out there that you already should know. What we’re going to do now is going to be the supernatural deliverance of Egypt. But you’re responsible for obeying the revelation that is already been given. Which goes to Mercedes Point. Joseph Moses wife performs a circumcision and she says you’re a bloody husband to me.
There’s probably great teaching there in blood covenant circumcision and how God‘s is predicated upon obedience to the covenant and that you can’t expect God to supernaturally bless and prosper you if you don’t keep your side of the covenant.
Carl: Well, you bring up a good point though because now we’re under a different covenant under the New Testament after Jesus has already died and risen. So what job is it of ours to honor the old covenant because even Jesus said, keep my commandments, not just my commandments of keep the law. Which a lot of Christians don’t keep the Jewish law but that was what Jesus was referring to. So, also like Why do we have to abide by the Old Covenant when we love live under a new covenant?
Lance: Well, there’s 631 precepts in the Old Testament law that applied to the ceremonial and he was doing away with that by a new covenant. He said, this is the new covenant in my blood and then he reduced the commandments down to two, to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself and then he reduced it to one final which is love one another. So, he simplified the moral code of the Old Testament but to the point of this conversation without losing the here.
Mercedes: Oh, can I say something to what?
Lance: Let me finish a thought here, Mercedes.
Mercedes: Okay.
Lance: The point of the conversation is that there’s nothing God is going to say to you, Carl. This is the point. In the New Testament or the New Covenant that is led by the spirit which will contradict what the spirit of the word says, that God isn’t contradicting himself. So, if the Word of God says thou shalt not steal, the spirit won’t lead you to steal from a bank or from anyone else. If the spirit of God says, thou shalt not kill, then your act of vengeance your desire to take out a political person as a leader, you have to really work that one through like Dietrich Bonhoeffer did when it came time to assassinate Hitler. Because Bonhoeffer was part of the plot to kill Hitler.
Carl: Yeah, the whole like thou shalt not kill is just completely by Ecclesiastes 3 because there is a time to kill. So, there’s a lot of that issue going on. I know Mercedes had a point a few minutes ago.
Lance: But yeah, but the point I’m not done with mine, which is that the Logas is the word of God. The Rhema is the written word of God and the spoken word of God. So, God‘s spoken word will never contradict his written word. And when you have a spoken encounter as Moses had a Rhema encounter with God. Where God was talking. There still was in some form commandments that were clear and God will not you can’t disobey God in the word. Because you’re being led by the spirit so, and this is where I think we need a healthy dose of restored legalism to the body of Christ. Legalism meaning if you’re not running lawfully you get disqualified. I was thinking, well if you cheat on your income tax why not the government’s this and that. Well, you know what? If you want God to bless you financially, you can’t cheat customers you can’t cheat the government either. Pay what you owe is what Paul said.
So, you start thinking a little bit differently. I know one guy who’s a businessman who was really a wealthy guy and he said the Lord convicted him in a service one day when the Lord said, I do not want unjust balances and measures. He realized that he’s ripping people off to make a profit. He’s been a Christian for a while but he realized that he’s guilty in his business of not giving the value he can give and the Lord said, he doesn’t like unjust balances. He repented of that in order to go to the next level in his business. Your question, your thought.
Mercedes: I don’t have a question. I have a thought. That’s answer to Carl’s question and I think what everybody should go and read which is the book of Galatians and then specifically Galatians 5. Because I was just reading today again and it talks about how the law brings death and under the law there is death. But we don’t live under the law, we love it under walking in the spirit it literally talks about walking in the spirit. So, I just want to read this for Carl. So, I’m going to pick up in 12. It says 5:5 verse 13, For you are called to freedom brethren, only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word. In the statement, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you and devour one another, take care that you’re not consumed by one another. But I say walk by the spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh. For those who are in opposition to one another so that you may not do things that you please but if you’re led by the spirit, you’re not under the law. Now, the deeds of the flesh are evident which are immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes of dissension, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these of which I forewarn you just as I forewarn you that those who practice such things do not inherit the kingdom of God. We’re almost done, okay? But the fruit of the spirit is love and joy and peace and patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control against such things there is no law. Now, those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its and its desires. For if we live by the spirit, let us walk by the spirit. Let those, let us not become boastful, challenging one another and being one another.
So, I just think it’s a great closing verse for the whole segment because it talks about walking in the spirit. It talks about what you’re talking about. There’s a new and a better covenant which is the one that’s in the spirit but your spirit, what Lance is talking about wars against the things of the flesh and the flesh against the spirit. So, we have to choose, we have to choose to live in the spirit and then you it literally says won’t desire those fleshy things anymore. So anyways, that was my short answer or long answer.
Lance: Hallelujah, well this is such a profound subject but the truth is, if the law to those Gentiles that didn’t know the Hebrew law didn’t understand Judaism and the you know and then they wanted to circumcise. I think Paul comes along and says no, no, no the holy spirit will teach you everything that you need to know. Because the law is written on your heart already. So,here’s what Paul wrote to the Gentiles. What’s great about Paul is here’s a guy who’s the Pharisee a Pharisee. If anybody could have been the legalist it would him and he’s the guy that beat back all the legalists. He said, hey, hey, hey. None of you got anything on me. Leave these people alone. You’re going to mess them up. You keep talking like that.
Mercedes: You stood them to his face. That’s what he says at the beginning.
Lance: “For when the Gentiles which don’t have the law, do by nature”. I mean, Romans 2:13 and 14:50. It’s powerful statement. When these Gentiles, these ungodly people that aren’t Jews. When they don’t even have the law but they do by nature things that are written in the law. What is that? But they are a law under themselves. Ceaser knew what was right and wrong. And August they’d make their arguments about what was in the good of the republic and they argued moral arguments. That which shows the work of the law written in their hearts. Their conscience also bearing witness. You see how the law is written in your heart and you know what’s right and wrong. Conscience bears witness with what you’re doing with that and then your soul, your thoughts will accuse or excuse you.
So, you got your thoughts, your heart. It’s Paul’s dealing with the anatomy of the inner man. In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Stop right there. The most important sober realization in the world is that you can shut down that little black box recorder in your head anytime you want. You could shut down communication. You could justify yourself, have a little raging internal dialogue. God‘s going to Open up the black box and play what you’re saying to yourself but he’s going to go one level deeper. He’s going to play to you what he was saying to you that you heard and didn’t listen to. Today, one of the strangest revelations of the Bible is today, if you will hear God‘s voice. This is a Hebrews chapter 4. I always found that problem and I realized today, everybody wants to hear God about. What’s going to happen? What’s going to happen? What’s God say? But what if God wants to talk to you about where you need to get your life sorted out or you need to repent? Where you need to do something different? It’s like we don’t want to hear that. So, the question is today, if you’re really willing to hear what God has to say, open up your heart and listen.
Mercedes: Yeah.
Lance: Because the problem isn’t with God‘s voice, the problem is with our willingness.
Mercedes: I think his voice sounds a little different too where I know what you’re saying. It sounds like in the when you started earlier, it’s like it sounds like Carl. It sounds like me. It sounds like you. But I found when I am hearing from the Lord, he’s addressing me. It it’s like almost like Mercedes, you need to hear me right now. It’s things like that. He’ll call me by my name and he’ll address me how I don’t address myself in my head like in my internal dialogue I’m just.
Lance: Yeah.
Mercedes: But when he speaks it’s as if you’re speaking to me. So, even though it sounds like me that how it’s interacting sounds very different.
Lance: That’s an interesting point because when Samuel was hearing the voice of the Lord, it sounded like Eli. Because Samuel kept getting up and coming to Eli and saying yes and Eli goes what you call me and I didn’t call you go to bed. Gets up again. What? You called me. Then Eli realized, next time, it’s so great Eli knew the voice of the Lord. He said, next time you hear my voice call you? Instead of waking me up. What did you say your servant hears Lord and the Lordstarted talking directly to the ear of August, a 9-year-old? Right about then because the kid was hearing God.
Mercedes: Wow.
Lance: But he was hearing him in the voice of his authority and there’s a lesson there. If you honor the authorities that God puts in your life and there are people that God will put in your life. If you honor them, you’ll hear in a sense God will train you to hear him as your conscience is working with obeying and submitting and loving and supporting, God will train you on how to hear his voice and at a very early age, you’ll start to hear the authority of God because you learn how to hear earthly authority.
Mercedes: Anyways, just throwing up. There’s a free one who’s thrown in there. In case people are like, what is God‘s voice sound like? Well, you’re right because it can sound like you but it interacts with me in a different way. It’s like you need to listen to this right now. Like stop telling yourself blah, blah, blah. Almost like as if a best friend talking to me or someone speaking to me. It’s not me talking to me. So, that’s just I think it’s interesting.
Lance: Carl, you’ve been around these prophets and Bob Bradberry. Did Bob Bradberry say anything to you or Graham Cook or any of these guys who talk to you about God God‘s voice?
Carl: I’m sure they did, but it wasn’t like it’s going to sound like a deep timber or anything like that. It was.
Lance: Do you remember Bob Bradbury talking to Chris and tell about the little angel? He used to talk about the you’d see spirits. You’d see angels, right? I don’t know if you remember that but I do, because I always thought it was such an unusual theology but you would see the angels that were there. You tell Chris about when you see this. You act like if you see like you’re going to see these angels too. I know other people didn’t see them.
Mercedes: When we’re with Mario, I was floored and we’re going to see Mario. Well, yeah. Well, we’re going to have lots of events with Mario. I don’t know when this going to play, but when we were with Mario Sacramento which we never talked about Lance. We haven’t even talked about this yet. It blew me away. The words of knowledge that he was getting like I’ve been around Pentecostalism but I’ve never done a real tent revival like that. I mean, he’s saying things like, ma’am, ma’am, you have 3 tumors. They found one a week ago. They just found two more yesterday. Is that right? And she’s like, yeah, God‘s healing all that. You were in a car accident, your shoulders all messed up. Is that we’ve never met, right? We’ve never met. Is that accurate?Yes, that’s accurate. Oh, my goodness.
There’re ladies behind us, he says, ma’am, you struggle with severe nausea and dizziness and he says dizziness and the two women together like there must been like girlfriends or something and they look at each other. And they’re like in shock like how could he have known that and just the expressions on people’s faces and it’s just this word of knowledge and healing and it was wild. So, afterwards, we’re in the car and I had to ask Mario. Like Mario, how do you hear that? Is it a word you’re seeing? Is it a picture? Is it something over that person? And Mario’s response was different because it’s not necessarily how I hear the Lord, but he says I look at people and I, it’s like I get an immediate read on what’s happening in them. It’s like a knowing of this person is dealing with this particular situation. It’s interesting because he was saying like he gets it as almost like a sense and a knowing lamp. Like like in this gut area here and it’s like you get like an immediate read on somebody.
Carl: Right.
Mercedes: But he doesn’t really know until he’s in there and he’s seeing it happen and it’s just so different. Because I see words in my head or I’ll see like a picture of something but I don’t have that like.
Carl: Yeah.
Mercedes: Like all of a sudden, I’m tuned in so.
Carl: Yet. You don’t have that yet.
Mercedes: I don’t have that yet. There you go.
Lance: It was the prophets that were telling me when I was working with them, they’d say, well, how it works for me is, I got to if someone’s face keeps Tim’s stories are the same thing. If someone’s face in the crowd keeps popping up. Like I’m looking at the whole crowd but you keep sometimes there’s one two or three people. That’s the Lord saying. They’re on your radar. That’s what Mario says. He someone distracts him in the crowd and that distraction is God‘s attraction. The distraction becomes God‘s attraction, right. So, he sees the person in the crowd and here’s what these prophets told me. They had to laid their hands on them in order to get the word for them, because they were laying hands on type prophets.
So, in other words, they could see you but they couldn’t sense the word of the Lord until they had that point of contact, and the point of contact for them was I know who I’m supposed to minister to, brother, would you come up here for a second. Let me, sorry if I lay hands on you and pray. Then as they laid hands on him the Lord would give him the word. So, they were picking up on stuff.
Mercedes: Wow.
Lance: And I was thinking, oh that’s wild Kim Clint told me when he was on the stage up at Tony Donofrio’s church in Dix Hill’s upper room. He said, you know, what’s challenging is? He said, ‘I have to get together with the Lord before the church, before the service. Because when I’m on the platform, there’s a lot of performance anxiety I’ve had to work through which is people expect me to prophesy. So, the crowd has an expectation. I have to move that aside or I’ll start to prophesy for the crowd’s sake.’ Which I think what happens with a lot of prophets.
Mercedes: Yup.
Lance: He said, ‘Now the person in front of me has a voice they have a desire and they have an issue and they have a need and they’re crying out to God. I hear them. I could pick up.’ He said, ‘A lot of prophets are soulish prophets. They’re prophesying to what they’re hearing and the person’s touched and teary eyed and though this was amazing. They read my mail. Well, they read your mail because your soul has a voice. That was doesn’t mean God was talking. It means that they could hear what you were praying about. So, many times ago, I don’t know what happened. I was told I was going to meet a guy and I was told I was going to have a baby. I was going to told all of that stuff can happen as the prophet in sincerity is hearing you and, in their inexperience, I’ve been Lord‘s telling me you’re going to have a child. Oh, that’s what I want.’
So, there’s that part. So, Kim says, I’ve got the voice of the crowd. I’ve got the voice of the person. He said, then I got the voice of the devil who is using the moment to pressure me to cook something up. He said, and that’s different than the crowd because the crowd has one cacophony. The person has another and the devil says, you better say something. He says, ‘I’ve got an pushed that out.’ He said, ‘You know what? I don’t have to hear God because the only voice that’s left is his.’ He said, ‘Actually, God‘s talking the whole time. My job is to remove the distraction of the other three voices.’
Mercedes: Wow.
Lance: And he said, ‘That’s why I pray before a meeting so I can get into a state where at least I feel as though I’ve relocated and recalibrated to separating voices and I can hear God‘s voice. and I can sneak in.’ So, let me give you this one little quick teaching here. Matthew chapter 5 verse 14-16. Remember how I talked to you about this Spirit of man is the candle of the Lord and so I put a I put this supposed to be a light bulb. “Your spirit of your man, you should be led by the spirit”. What does it mean to be led by the spirit? To be led by the spirit means I’m led by my spirit. I’m not being led by the eye cloud. I’m being led by my spirit, my inner man. Now, watch this. “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord. Search in the innermost parts of the belly. Neither do men light a candle Jesus says in Matthew 5:14-16 and put it under a bushel but on a candlestick and it gives unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven”.
So here, just take it for what it’s worth. Somebody can say I’m over; I’m pulling this thing apart. The spirit of man is the look at that. The spirit of man in Proverbs says, “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord and it searches”. What’s it searching? The innermost parts of the belly or the heart is what the modern translation says. So, the spirit of man is a candle whose job is to search the heart or what searching down here. Now, watch what Jesus says. I’ll say it again Mercedes, you can read it. Which one? It’s going to be, you’re going to be reading Matthew chapter 5 verses 14-16.
Mercedes: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house”.
Lance: Notice, look at this. “And let your light shine before men”.
Mercedes: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works”.And someone Circle this here, “And glorify your father who is in heaven”.
Lance: Watch and see what Jesus is saying. The candle, spirit of man, the spirit of man is the candle. The lampstand I believe is the soul, because the lampstand over here refers to your mind, your imagination. In other words, when like you’re in the spirit, what does it mean? It means that your soul is under the control of your spirit. That’s why when the Bible talks about the priority and so is spirit, soul, body, not body, soul, spirit. You’re led by the spirit. Your spirit, the Lordused to say to me, ‘Keep your spirit in the ascended position.’ So, I was wondering, Lord, what are you talking about? Keep it, keep the candle leading. Keep the light of the spirit first. And then under that is your soul. Make your mind your servant. Don’t let your mind run away with fear.
I was wrestling with some stuff recently. A prophet sent me a word saying, hey, I feel in a couple of months next time today is be very careful, because the spirit of betrayal is out there and there’s a spirit of betrayal and somebody’s got an offense with you unless they’re going to take that offense. It’s going to become a betrayal and it’s you know what? Betrayal happens in the body of Christ and I’m thankful I had a prophet friend who was warning me, but I started like thinking Who is it? Who is it? And right away the Lord said, ‘Ho, keep your mind free from fear. Put it under the spirit. Do not be afraid of what is happening.’ This is meant to be for you a discernment word. It’s not meant to cause you to be paralyzed with anxiety.
Spirit, soul, mind, and emotions. So, your emotions in your mind. Now look what happens in the world right here. The devil is a spirit. And the Devil’s spirit is controlling emotions, flaming up frustration, anger, words, protests, political nations, upheaval. Folks, the only sanity you’ve got is putting your spirit in the ascended position. Read that again please and catch what Jesus said.
Mercedes: Sure. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven”.
Lance: You put the light on the lampstand. You don’t put the lampstand on the light and you don’t hide the light under a bushel. I’m sure the bushel refers to where that where we hide because of fear because of other factors.
Mercedes: I think it’s interesting Lance as you’re talking about all of this and the rhetoric that is in politics right now where especially on the Democrat side. I know Biden said it. We’re in a battle for the soul of America. We’re in the battle for the soul of America. Like I’ve heard that so many times. But if this is true in an individual format, also wonder if it’s true for a nation. That the soul of America is under the disposition of the spirit that America and when God‘s spirit is the one that is over America, everything’s in right order. But then when we have like a progressive ideology for science or progressive whatever it is that that is now taking its place and then and we are in a battle for the soul of America.
Lance: And it goes right to what we’ve been talking about in this broadcast because you want to talk about God‘s called you to do something. God‘s called you for your destiny. Look at what it says here. “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven”. I never saw this before till now, but you have to see that Godhas given you works to do and if you’re led by the spirit, you’ll be doing spirit-led works. You let your light shine when you’re doing the work God called you to do. When you’re led by the spirit, you’re doing the works that cause God to be glorified, because they end up seeing God for the works that you do.
Let me read it again. Let your light shine how, so that you’re led by the spirit to do the works God called you to do, that will glorify your father which is in heaven. Then it’s interesting, he adds there hey don’t think I came to destroy the law. I didn’t come to destroy the Old Covenant.Carl, I didn’t come to destroy the Old Testament law, I came actually to fulfill it and to write it on the inside of you so that it’s led by a new heart instead of reluctantly having to grit your teeth and do something external. I want your spirit to be inscribed with the commandments written on your heart.
Mercedes: Amen.
Lance: Yeah, because the Old Testament, Jesus came to fulfill all of the aspects of the law that had to be fulfilled by him prophetically, things he had to do. But then it was the other part which is he’s the only man that lived the law perfectly without sin. Like he said, which he convicts me of sin. So, then he did away with the law as the means of eternal life by fulfilling and dying in our place so that if we put our trust in him, his death is a substitute for our performance. And actually, God himself has made a way of life.
Carl: And it was legalism that killed him.
Lance: Well, it was in a sense it was the law became a curse for us because the law says you should always do good and do right and we don’t. And it’s like in that case, there’s a consequence. But the law isn’t evil the law just points out it’s like Having a Charles Spurgeon had a great conversation with someone about the law and human nature. He had a walking stick and he would walk with the stick. He said, look, let me explain it to as a young guy who’s discussing it. He laid the walking stick down. He said, ‘You see that stick?’ He said, ‘Go grab me a branch. Go over that tree. Just break up a branch.’ Kid breaks up. He said, lay it down next to it. He said, ‘There’s nothing wrong with this stick. It’s straight. It shows every deviation.’
Jesus died on the tree in order to put to death the penalty for the deviation. He was the perfect fulfillment. The law isn’t bad. The law is good. Problem is we’re crooked. So, the law shows you where you’re it’s never going to be a vehicle to become righteous. It’s going to be the vehicle to show where you’re not righteous. So that that law then can be fulfilled by coming into your heart. Now you’ve got the power that can live right on the inside of you and forgiveness for where you fail and fall short. That’s the power of the gospel.
