Lance: Hi, I’m Lance Wallnau and my greatest joy is teaching and I come from a probably a long line of rabbis and teachers on my dad’s side. Both my brothers are like college professors but I was the kid in school that nobody thought would ever graduate. I wasn’t voted the most likely to succeed. I certainly wasn’t the one that everyone was breathlessly watching to see if I’d be valedictorian. In fact, there was bets on whether or not I even graduate. And that’s the reason why I love personal development. Because personal development for someone like me is the discovery of a map to navigate into the uncharted waters of the discovery of who you really could be if 100% of you showed up. And that starts to put you in a whole new world. It’s like a world of well what did God design me to do. And what would happen if I took the slender apparatus of my own limited intellect or speaking ability. 

I completely surrendered it to God and I said, make of me the man that you want me to be. I want to do what you call me to do, because that’s essentially what I did. And out of that, came this latent activation of a thirst to know things and the beginning of the process of training and teaching others is to first become a disciple, to become a student, to become a teachable person. One of the things we found out early in the research we did is that the temptation of mastery in any field is to prematurely shut yourself off from the mentoring of other people and other resources. In other words, it’s quite possible that you can get really good at something. And when you do you become arrogant conceded and egotistic and you’re no longer learning. The moment you’re no longer learning, you’re no longer in a humble teachable state. Sure as anything, you’re going to find somebody else has gotten to where you are and is going past you, and it’s because there’s a certain humility with which we come to these ideas that you’re going to learn in these courses.

The humility is that the principle is bigger than you. The idea outlasts you. We’re not trying to create a reality like a post-modernist worldview where I’m just kind of making up what I want to believe. We’re actually looking for the laws and the physics of success and the models that work best. But not only in terms of personal development. We’re looking for models that work in terms of teaching development. Because like I said, I’m a teacher and the kind of people that I attract are rabbis. I attract people that want to teach, who want to educate others, who live for the moment when they can articulate and communicate a powerful idea that makes a permanent impact on someone else whose eyes light up when they hear the idea and whose world is changed. Because somehow you got into the alchemy of the way that they think.

So for that reason, use the flip chart a lot because the flip chart is a visual way of communicating ideas and concepts. Some people are auditory. They just process information this way in their ears. Others are visual learners and they learn by seeing and observing. For me, I really get ideas much better when I see them done and for that reason, I can remember when I was a young man, I used to go to these seminars by a guy named Bill Gothard and they would be an arena no less,whoever heard of a teacher with an arena of people wanting to hear what they have to teach. But he did it with pictures and he did it with kind of like a big projector actually and he just with a grease pen he would draw and illustrate biblical ideas and they were very powerfully communicated.

This for instance is a very simple idea. It’s an XY axis and it’s just a two-axis model which implies that there’s some kind of a field over here. And when I began to about a unique way of communicating personal development I started thinking, well, there’s really a couple of axiseshere that are really critical. From a biblical worldview, we know that for instance David played the harp and that was in a sense the artist that was in him. But he also was ingenious with being able to wield a slingshot and so if has this slingshot and so if he has the ability or the skill to be able to direct the stone at a target he could take down a giant. But if he has the ability here to be able to create his own environment for his soul and for his mind to commune with God, then he has a certain mastery of an emotional quality. Then we began to realize that passion or emotional intelligence are two of the heart continuums that have a tremendous impact on the way in which a person is going to process life.

So we have this heart component which is where the feelings are, which is where the self-talk is,which is where in a sense the management of the fury and the tempest of the emotional life takes place. But over here we have a more calculated arena and I think what I’ll do here is I’ll put a diamond because this really illustrate what this territory is all about. A diamond is a very hard beautiful gem and the diamond itself has its own facets, its own features. This is similar to the idea of competence. Competence and skill are like the gems of the jewels that you bring with you into the battle. They are the slingshot of your talents. You’re a hard-wired capacity to be able to communicate, to think, to solve problem, to be able to sing, physical ability, if you’re an athlete.

Those skills have to be married to a certain quality of personal management, emotional management, handling of how you show up. So, that if you’ve got the competence continuum strong and you’ve got this passion continuum strong, then you might say you’re operating at like a Level10. So, 10 being the highest Now, if 10 is the highest potential, what that Level10 skill development, competence, and ability tells us is by the way, I’m going to add something else here. I’ll grab another pen. I like using different colored pens. I’m going to say that wisdom is one of the skills. One of the competencies that you have to work with. Wisdom here is the ability to apply the knowledge that you’ve got and the talent and ability that you have in order to achieve,bam, what you want to accomplish at the highest level.

What we discovered is that as David led Israel with integrity of heart and skillfulness of hand being his slingshot. He was able to take Israel into its destiny in the same sense in the level ten scenario, the passion, the emotion, the artist within the competence, the wisdom, the skill, the hard, the hard assets that you got. When these come together and when they converge together, they give you access to something and this is where we call like sometimes a level 10, 10 realm.Or when I was working with different schools of thought, this would be similar to when what Abraham Maslow would be pushing into as self-actualization. An area where your identity and your esteem and your emotional life has been in a sense matured so that you can actually operate at a high level of intuitive, being present to the moment, mastery in decision making and in showing up.

Very few people hit the realm of actualization. But as I looked at this level 10 model, I began to think a lot about John 10:10 where Jesus said, “I had come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly.” I began to realize that a lot of life is the journey moving into an ascended development of confidence, wisdom, life skill but it also comes down to if you don’t mind me saying so. There’s a continuum of emotional maturity sanctification of the heart, purification of the motives. You could say that love is on the other side of wisdom is the motivation of the heart.So, there is a wisdom in seeking love and in another sense those are true lovers of wisdom are the ones that will be able to ascend that ladder here. Both of these hierarchies, both of these levels are incredibly important because if you want to achieve that Level10 Life, what happens if you’re living at a Level10 awareness of your skill and you maybe you’re at like a level 6 and a half engagement with life.

Well, I tell people you’re leaving this much on the table. That’s how much of life you’re not taking and by the way, life doesn’t stop. It isn’t like at 60, you get to punch the clock and go back and retake life at 40. You have to continue the game at 60. Now the test may repeat themselves but you don’t get to go back in time. You just get to show up with more wisdom in the next test. Well, this could be how much you’re leaving on the table in terms of love. Could be the relationships you ought to have that you don’t have, because you’re afraid of the risk involved. It could be the money that you’re not making, the earning capacity that you’ve got, to be able to have the freedom to do what you want to do. It could be that in a maybe even a loftier sense.

Let me use a different idea here. Let’s put the cross here. Let’s say that God has so much more for your eternal reward, for your eternal assignment. The souls that you touch, the lives that you change, the institutions you reform, the nations you impact, those eternal things are left there and what does it come down to? It really comes down to how you work on the development of the heart journey so that you are the person you’re called to be. And then the confidence journey, the skill, the discovery of what it is that you do best, how you’re wired, what God gave you as the natural equipment to accomplish things and then it it’s the intentionality with which we develop and expand. Expand, expand, expand our personal capacity. Because inside of this beautiful model, things get very clear, very fast.

What we found is that the power that you have, that you have and the talents that God has given you actually connects you on a path. So, that where you are presently, can move forward into the future potential of what it is you’re called to do. Your passion over here is a whole subject. Your present is a whole subject. Your personal power is a subject. And when we look at your ultimate life purpose, that for which you were born, that for which you were created. Jesus said, “for this reason I was born, for this cause, I came into the world”. Ultimate life purpose is what you want to be able to accomplish. But to do that you have to show up in a sense qualified for that moment in history and that leads us to the path.

What we found in our research with Level10 is that by using this simple XY–axis and looking that 1 to 5 to 10 kind of matrix, we can help people see where they are presently, be able to identify what influences in their past are impacting their present. And then be able to find their zigzag if you will. Because it does seem like it’s never a direct path, but it’s an adjustment attacking like a like a ship sailing in the ocean as you move forward. But if you know what your personal power is, if you know what your skill competence, talent, ability, sphere of mastery, and authority is. If you have wisdom or wise counsel, then you can show up, you can manage the emotional journey of self-control to personal responsibility, empathy, how you connect with other people and communicate the disposition of Christ in the way that you need to show up.

This actually enables you to move progressively through higher and higher levels of path into purpose, a going to see this process laid out for you. And I think meticulous detail and at the same time broad strokes so that as a teacher as a trainer as an educator you’re able to take these basic five or six components of the puzzle of life and super impose it on any client, any student to help them get clarity on where they are presently. Because our saying of course is clarity is power. The more that people journey into this area of tasting new love, tasting new destiny, tasting new rewards, it increases their confidence to step out and risk and practice more.

Lance: So, there I was in another seminar and I was watching with great interest as the facilitator began talking about all the people that he was coaching in peak performance and began focusing on personal capacity. Because in like our Level10 model, you can imagine. If you’re going to be focusing on this kind of level 10, 10 exertion and you’re going to be up in this quadrant. Well, let’s face it. The people that are in that quadrant are in terms of, let’s just put it this way. People that want to dominate any vertical of mastery in a career are probably obsessively committed to that thing. Probably a lot more than you and I would be. In other words, you might want to have a balanced life at 40 hours a week or maybe you’ll do 50 hours a week for your career. These people live and eat and sleep almost out of balance in that career.

So, this kind of becomes a funny anomaly force. Because the people that are disproportionately dominant in certain hierarchies do it at the expense of their life. Many times you see them divorcing. As in the papers this week, another highly visible 29-year couple everybody, having their own big billion-dollar foundation. Well, they’re announcing divorce. Somewhere along the line in order to dominate those outcomes that they were looking for there was a price paid in terms of other areas. You see it in health. You see it in Marriages. You see it in families. So, let’s talk about how to go into the place of a Level10 Life without having the tires blow out. The moment that you arrive at the destination you wanted to get to. And the tires blowing out is a great analogy, because what we find is that you have a personal capacity (PC), your personal capacity is the wheel that you’ve got.

The way that I look at this is there’s a lot of images here. I love drawing pictures like this. Your personal capacity actually is made up of slices. I’ll grab a red pen for this. It’s slices of your light.Some people like my son Carl will have four major areas, because he likes to have of simple powerful models. Other lives might have 7, 8 or 9 or 10, but at a bare minimum you’re going to have to be looking at an area of your life is going to be your physical energy. Because there’s nothing worse than moving to let’s put make this over here career capacity, okay. So, we’ll do the inversion of this. I want to be able to have this tremendous career. I want to accomplish a whole lot, but my career is now going to be limited by my personal capacity.

What’s going to happen for instance, if I don’t take care of my physical life? Well, my health will collapse over here in my career. What’s going to happen if I don’t take care of my social obligations? And by the way, there’s more than one area there. That could be my marriage but it could also be a child. Suppose you have a child that suddenly has juvenile issues or some form of physical crisis. Trust me, that’s going to impact your personal capacity to show up over here at the level you want to show up in your career. Suppose that you a financial hole in the net and here you are, you’re trying to go for that extra course or that you’re want to fly in for that key convention or conference where you can meet key people, but you don’t have the money to do it. You don’t have the finances to do it.

So, what happens here is in the personal capacity realm, we discover that while there is an ideal for the wheel of life. What happens if your wheel is actually built like this, it’s filled out there, there, there, it’s missing something there and what you realize is that in the areas that you’re not the most developed. Those are the areas that are going to directly have an impact on pulling you out of career capacity or convergence.

Another way of looking at this is, let’s say that this personal capacity is the mountain of me. This is you. This is the entire resource you’ve got. Just so much time, so much energy, so much money, so much spiritual resourcefulness, so much psychic connection with yourself and other people, you’ve only got so much to give. And then if that is somehow not being tended to properly, then, how’s the journey of life going to be on a vehicle that has wheels shaped like this?So, your personal capacity directly impacts your ability to go to the top of any kind of thing we call convergence. We’ll look at later, and that’s the sweet spot where your skills and knowledge and ability have prepared you for a role where you can really excel. But while you’re in the role, you have the crisis in the marriage or in the family or in your health or in a financial distraction and you’re not able to show up 100% in the way that you were called to show up.

You see why this is important? And that’s the reason why for us it all starts with the wheel of life because the wheel of life as you remember ties us into our present analysis. When you go to the mall, you ever notice that when you want to go somewhere you go to the like a map in the mall and it says, you are here. The reason why you need to know that you are here is because if you’re looking for the store over here, you to be able to figure out where am I in the journey to get there.

So, in terms of the Level10 model, what we’re looking for is this elusive place that level 10, 10 area where convergence happens, where the magic happens. And you want to be able to have a level 10 strategy and you want to be able to show up in the Level10 state necessary to get there.But if you’ve got unfinished business, then what you find is your personal capacity right here is going to be directly proportionate to the wheel of life. And so what you want to do is you want to pay attention to having as balanced and maintained a life wheel as possible. You want to take care of your emotional, mental, spiritual, physical, relational, financial, and family commitments.Because it’s having the well-developed and balanced wheel that enables you to be able to move on the path to actualization where you’re going to find the convergence of those factors is meeting at a Level10 Life.

Your personal capacity right here on the wheel of life determines sustainability in convergence.If you want to go to the top of the mountain getting there requires that you actually do an inventory. Now for some of you like I said there are different people that have different categories they look at. I’ve added for my own life areas that I’m encouraging you to look at which is marriage and romance but also recreation. Because you weren’t built to just be constantly doing, doings. Matter of fact you actually need that Sabbath, you need that cycle of disengagement and renewal. So, I actually have categories here for recreation in terms of fun and looking over your life, also environment. I believe that your environment does shape you. And so, for many of you that are Visceral, kinesthetic or visual, you need an environment that matches your need for motivation.

So, I encourage you to take a look at the details in the wheel of life and make sure that you fill this out so that you could see that at the end of the day, catch this. This area here when it’s describing what is the best life that you want, you will notice that the best life that you want actually defines what you want to have in terms of life purpose. The past and the present connect you to your future. Get clear on what it is you want here and you’ll see it’s actually what you’re striving for in the Level10 Life.
