Mike Pompeo Says Hong Kong 'no longer autonomous'

Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, declared on Wednesday that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China after Beijing imposed new national security laws on the region.
Chinese government officials announced that the National People’s Congress will review legislation that would criminalize anti-government movements, such as the pro-democracy protests seen in Hong Kong prior to the coronavirus outbreak. Hong Kong operates under the so-called “one country, two systems” framework that grants freedoms to residents in Hong Kong not available to mainland Chinese citizens. In reality this new legislation would bring about the end of Hong Kong autonomy.
In a statement Mike Pompeo said:
“Beijing’s disastrous decision is only the latest in a series of actions that fundamentally undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms and China’s own promises to the Hong Kong people under the Sino-British Joint Declaration, a U.N.-filed international treaty,”
This is one of several incursions that Beijing have tried to impose on the liberties of Hong Kong since the UK gave back the territory in 1997.
